Retailing in India is on the brink of a revolution and is poised for exponential growth. What are the underlying opportunities & challenges before the various stake holders and constituencies in this exciting sector?
12:00 - 12.45 Expanding Horizons of Indian Retail
S Siva Kumar,
Chief Executive, ITC International Business
(also echaupal & Chaupal Sagar rural retail venture)

Organised retailing in India is no more restricted to the metros and major cities. Of late, India's rural market has also caught the eye of Indian corporate majors. Scope in small cities and towns. Learning from a visionary who has big dreams for rural India.
12:45 - 13:30Discovering an Identity for Indian Retail
Arun Nanda,
ED & President, Mahindra & Mahindra

In the emerging scenario is there a scope to differentiate Indian Retail ? Do we all follow the western formats promoting and selling western wares & culture ?Retail cannot grow by developing only malls and that too cater to the needs of locals only. Unlike Singaporeans who say "Shopping is our National Game", we Indians are not so shop savvy. To grow retail we also have to promote India as a shopping destination for international shoppers and to do that we need to give Indian retail an Indian face - the malls, the markets, the offerings ? While we bring in foreign formats to grow Indian retail, it is vital that India develops her own format as well that even foreigners would love to copy ?

The retail sector is one of India's single largest endeavors - generating almost 10% of GDP and serving as the second largest source of employment. At the same time, it is also one of the least evolved in terms of productivity and infrastructure. There are several socio-economic benefits that modernization of the retail sector can bring in. Modern retail can drive the transformation of the agricultural supply chain, remove inefficiencies in the distribution of consumer goods, and improve overall labour productivity and employment - and at the same time enhance consumers' access to better products at lower prices.

Trend Spotting in Retail
Guide : Prof. Bernd Hallier , MD, EuroShop

Customers today are beginning to enjoy their shopping. Which means that retailers need to concentrate primarily on offering convenience, quality and a genuine retail experience and continuously innovate to add more to what consumers expect.

The future belongs to those who can evoke an emotional response by appealing to the senses, whether in the form of olfactory marketing, eye-catching shapes or unusual colouring. It's no longer enough for shopfitting to provide a showcase for goods; above all it must create an atmosphere and convey a sense of well-being in order to enhance shoppers' buying enjoyment. What does it take to remain fresh season after season, year after year ? Discuss and learn how to play with your store façade, interiors, stairs and corners
