Rated as the fifth most
attractive emerging market, Retail in India is undergoing a dramatic change.
While it has been great fun for consumers shopping in malls and visiting multiplexes
and fun zones, this period of transformation has been a challenging time for
the people in the business of retailing. On one hand the new players have been
struggling to find a pan India format, on the other the traditional retailers
have been pushed to change and keep pace with new evolving formats of retail.
The financial year 2003-04 saw many turn arounds, expansions and a lot of excitement
in the marketplace. Retail Ambience, Differentiation, Product Innovation and
Customer Service have been the focus of all thoughts conceptualizing retail and
those who have delivered on these grounds have seen success.
Identifying the need for rewarding success in retail, IMAGES instituted IMAGES
RETAIL AWARDS.
The two-day ICSC Conference on Shopping Centre & Retail
culminated in the country's first ever felicitation of golden performers in Retailing
across all major segments of the industry. The Grand at New Delhi was the assemblage
point of who's who of Indian Retail, more than 500 of the country leading retailers
and retail real estate developers bestowed accolades on the proud winners, the
top honours among whom went to Kishore Biyani, declared the Retail Face of the
Year 2004.

| SELECTION PROCESS |
The selection process of the IMAGES RETAIL AWARDS
involved a nationwide industry poll and self-nomination followed by detailed
performance assessment by Images' Knowledge Partner KSA Technopak, the Indian
joint venture of global consultant Kurt Salmon Associates (KSA) specialising
in Consumer Goods and Retail Sectors.
Retailer performance report thus compiled was then scrutinised and re-evaluated
by a hi-profile Jury chaired by Mr. Michael Fernandes, Principal - McKinsey & Co and comprised eminent personalities like Ms. Renuka Ramnath, Managing Director & CEO
- ICICI Venture Funds Management Co Ltd, Dr. Darlie O Koshy, ED - National Institute
of Design, Mr. Anuj Puri, MD - Chesterton Meghraj Property Consultants Pvt Ltd,

Kishore Biyani is the Managing Director of the Rs. 500 crore Pantaloon Retail
(India) Ltd., the company that currently operates with 37 stores in three formats
across the country. Foraying in retailing with The Pantaloon Shoppe in mid nineties,
Biyani launched his discount hypermarkets concept in 2001 and introduced a pan-Indian
retailing model, Big Bazaar, selling around 2 lac items at discounts ranging
from 6% to 60%. Then came Food Bazaar and Gold Bazaar.
A contrarian at heart, Kishore Biyani prides in being Indian and advocates
'Indianness' as a core value driving his company. Kishore Biyani's vision is

in the store with see, touch, and choose & pick feel of a local bazaar. The

Viveks is a MBO for consumer durables. Its outlets are concentrated in
Tamil Nadu & Karnataka with presence in 14 South Indian cities. All outlets
are company owned and are 3000-4000 sqft. While the turnover of the company observed
a 12% growth rate over previous year 2002-2003, there was a 57.3% rise in the
bottom line over the same period. The stores have all consumer durable and appliances
brands stocked together to give the consumer greater options. It also extends
a service guarantee in products retailed from the stores, independent of the
manufacturing guarantee. |

(both Indian and Hollywood) .The Company aims at taking the PVR brand all across

Pantaloon Retail is the pioneer in the retail industry and is among the
lead players in the country when it comes to multiplicity of formats with its
lifestyle as well as value retailing formats : Hypermarket - Big Bazaar; Food
and Grocery - Food Bazaar; Apparel - Pantaloons and Jewellery - Gold Bazaar.
While the Food Bazaar gave Indian Bazaar like appearance to fruit and vegetable
retailing to increase customer comfort level, Gold Bazaar gave the customer the
experience of transparency and a fair deal with options of several brands under
one roof.
Over the years Pantaloons has been clocking an impressive growth of 33% in revenues
as well as retail space. While its net profits rose by 98% to Rs. 22 crores (estimated)
in 2003-04 from Rs 11.41 crores in 2002-03, its sales per sq.ft. stood at Rs.
