Rated as the fifth most attractive emerging market, Retail in India is undergoing a dramatic change. While it has been great fun for consumers shopping in malls and visiting multiplexes and fun zones, this period of transformation has been a challenging time for the people in the business of retailing. On one hand the new players have been struggling to find a pan India format, on the other the traditional retailers have been pushed to change and keep pace with new evolving formats of retail.

The financial year 2003-04 saw many turn arounds, expansions and a lot of excitement in the marketplace. Retail Ambience, Differentiation, Product Innovation and Customer Service have been the focus of all thoughts conceptualizing retail and those who have delivered on these grounds have seen success.

Identifying the need for rewarding success in retail, IMAGES instituted IMAGES RETAIL AWARDS.
The two-day ICSC Conference on Shopping Centre & Retail culminated in the country's first ever felicitation of golden performers in Retailing across all major segments of the industry. The Grand at New Delhi was the assemblage point of who's who of Indian Retail, more than 500 of the country leading retailers and retail real estate developers bestowed accolades on the proud winners, the top honours among whom went to Kishore Biyani, declared the Retail Face of the Year 2004.

SELECTION PROCESS
The selection process of the IMAGES RETAIL AWARDS involved a nationwide industry poll and self-nomination followed by detailed performance assessment by Images' Knowledge Partner KSA Technopak, the Indian joint venture of global consultant Kurt Salmon Associates (KSA) specialising in Consumer Goods and Retail Sectors.

Retailer performance report thus compiled was then scrutinised and re-evaluated by a hi-profile Jury chaired by Mr. Michael Fernandes, Principal - McKinsey & Co and comprised eminent personalities like Ms. Renuka Ramnath, Managing Director & CEO - ICICI Venture Funds Management Co Ltd, Dr. Darlie O Koshy, ED - National Institute of Design, Mr. Anuj Puri, MD - Chesterton Meghraj Property Consultants Pvt Ltd, and Mr. Ninu Khanna, Managing Director - Bombay Dyeing, besides Mr. Arvind Singhal, Chairman - KSA Technopak.

Kishore Biyani is the Managing Director of the Rs. 500 crore Pantaloon Retail (India) Ltd., the company that currently operates with 37 stores in three formats across the country. Foraying in retailing with The Pantaloon Shoppe in mid nineties, Biyani launched his discount hypermarkets concept in 2001 and introduced a pan-Indian retailing model, Big Bazaar, selling around 2 lac items at discounts ranging from 6% to 60%. Then came Food Bazaar and Gold Bazaar.
A contrarian at heart, Kishore Biyani prides in being Indian and advocates 'Indianness' as a core value driving his company. Kishore Biyani's vision is to spearhead his Company to be the finest and the most preferred chain in retailing. He is the Co-Chairman, CII National Committee on Retailing.

Reliance WebWorlds are designed as the Reliance Infocomm's face to its customers. The outlets showcase the entire range of the company's products and services, besides acting as the flagship stores for sales and service. The Reliance WebWorlds comprise three modules - Customer Convenience Center (C3), Broad Band Center (BBC) and Java Green - the gourmet Coffee Bar. The stores are multi-format ones, with areas varying between 1000-4000 sqft. Last year saw opening of over 600 outlets. The number is expected to grow to 1000 covering 400 cities this year.

A shopping centre or a store that is favoured by locals, tourists and travellers alike for shopping; emerging as a retail destination for consumers and for brands as the most profitable avenue for retailing.

Turnover in year 2003-04: Rs 404 crore Pioneers of department store concept, Shoppers' Stop chain today is present in nine Indian cities. A member of the Intercontinental Group of Departmental Stores, Shoppers' Stop got the 'Superbrand' status in 2003. Its main offerings include clothing sportswear, cosmetics, watches, eyewear, footwear, bags, leather accessories and home products. Its private labels are Stop, Life, Kashish and Vettorio Fratini.

Exclusive brand or multibrand retailer of Clothing/Footwear/Jewellery & Accessories with a single or more outlets (with total retail space not less than 10,000 sq. ft.), showing outstanding performance with expansion within and beyond the boundaries of its operation in the previous year.

The company recently added eyewear brand - Fastrack and designer watches of Tommy Hilfiger to its profile.

Pantaloon Retail's Food Bazaar is currently functional in five cities with a total retail space of 99,400 sqft. The store was launched inside Big Bazaar to capitalise on its footfalls but went on to become a major success pulling crowds in its name. It brought the concept of 'Subzi Mandi' and 'Anaj Mandi' in the store with see, touch, and choose & pick feel of a local bazaar. The retail store also has private labels for a few F&G products.

It operates formats like Slimming Centers, Beauty Salons, Work Out Factories (Fitness), Nail and Studio Spas, personal care products & Beauty Shops with an estimated 1,44,000 sqft space.

Speciality leisure retailer Planet M operates through stand-alone and shop-in-shop formats with a total retail space of 65000 sqft. The stores are focussed on music categories and provide comprehensive CD and audio tape collections, video and gaming CD-ROMs.

Multibrand or exclusive brand retailer of consumer electronics products with a minimum of 3 outlets, setting standards in retailing; providing the ultimate shopping experience with innovation, quality and excellence in service.

Viveks is a MBO for consumer durables. Its outlets are concentrated in Tamil Nadu & Karnataka with presence in 14 South Indian cities. All outlets are company owned and are 3000-4000 sqft. While the turnover of the company observed a 12% growth rate over previous year 2002-2003, there was a 57.3% rise in the bottom line over the same period. The stores have all consumer durable and appliances brands stocked together to give the consumer greater options. It also extends a service guarantee in products retailed from the stores, independent of the manufacturing guarantee.

Fun zones, multiplexes etc. that have become destination points, providing the new-age experience in entertainment for families and shoppers.

A north India-based player, PVR Cinemas pioneered the multiplex concept with the country's first state-of-the-art multiplex in Saket, New Delhi in June 1997. It has also launched luxurious cine auditoriums called 'Europa Cinema & Lounge,' targeted at high-income segment. PVR also has interests in cinema and film distribution (both Indian and Hollywood) .The Company aims at taking the PVR brand all across the country.

Hypermarket/Discount Store/Factory Outlet with a minimum of 3 outlets of 5,000 sq. ft. each, successfully getting masses to shop in structured formats, luring them with discount offerings, schemes and great shopping experience, and at the same time ensuring profits for all stakeholders.

Winner: BIG BAZAAR

Present in eight Indian cities, Big Bazaar is the leading project of Pantaloon Retail occupying a total area of 390,000sqft. It retails around 170,000 products at prices that are 6-60% below MRP. Currently half of the Big Bazaar format constitutes apparel retailing and the other half is divided between household goods and food and groceries.

A chain of department stores with a minimum of 3 outlets of over 10,000 sq. ft. each, bringing in innovative concepts in lifestyle retailing, showing aggressive signs of growth and profitability, and gaining recognition among consumers.

"How to make your store the ultimate destination for your consumers". Who would know this better than the Landmark Group? Foraying into Indian retail with Lifestyle stores in 1999, the Indian arm has already seven stores operating in four of the Indian cities covering a net retail space of 3.2 lakh sqft. With its experience of over 30 years in retailing, understanding consumer needs and its acquired expertise in global sourcing, Lifestyle has strongly positioned its stores as destinations for a large variety of quality products. The chain has a Qwikys Coffee Island at each of its stores.

Lifestyle's loyalty programme 'The Inner Circle' boasts of over 2.2 lakh privileged members across the country. Innovative promotions like the 'Off Sale', 'Shop for a Surprise', 'Well O Fortune' and 'Mad For Each Other' are some of the most awaited in-store promos for shoppers. Lifestyle's weekend footfalls touch 32000.

Pantaloon Retail is the pioneer in the retail industry and is among the lead players in the country when it comes to multiplicity of formats with its lifestyle as well as value retailing formats : Hypermarket - Big Bazaar; Food and Grocery - Food Bazaar; Apparel - Pantaloons and Jewellery - Gold Bazaar. While the Food Bazaar gave Indian Bazaar like appearance to fruit and vegetable retailing to increase customer comfort level, Gold Bazaar gave the customer the experience of transparency and a fair deal with options of several brands under one roof.

Over the years Pantaloons has been clocking an impressive growth of 33% in revenues as well as retail space. While its net profits rose by 98% to Rs. 22 crores (estimated) in 2003-04 from Rs 11.41 crores in 2002-03, its sales per sq.ft. stood at Rs. 6000/-. Pantaloon's growth plans include expansion of its recently launched 'Central Mall' concept, a one stop shop for the whole family including shopping, eating and entertainment. Pantaloon's aim is to achieve sales of Rs. 1,000 crore by 2005.
